History of reflexology
Reflexology originates from ancient Egypt as evidenced by inscriptions found in physicians tomb in Egypt. There is evidence of some form of foot and hand therapy being practice in China 4,000 B.C. The North American Tribes of Indians are known to have practice a form of foot reflexology for hundreds of years. Dr William Fitzgerald (1872-1942) was an Ear,Nose and Throat Surgeon. He discovered the "Zone Therapy"(the early form of reflexology) and drew it to the attention of the medical world between 1915 and 1917. Between1915-1917 he wrote publications such as :"To stop that toothache, squeeze your toe" and "Zone Therapy or Relieving Pain in the Home".
Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) was a physiotherapist and she used Dr Fitzgerald's Zone Therapy method. She is known as the pioneer of reflexology, she mapped the feet with all the corresponding organs and glands of the body. Eunice devised a system of techniques, which enables practitioners to contact reflexes in most efficient and economic ways. She called this system "Ingham Method". She wrote two well-known books "Stories the feet can tell" and "Stories the feet have told". She formed the International Institute of Reflexology so that her pioneering work could be continued for ever. Eunice Ingham's nephew-Dwight Byers was working with her and he is the current President of the Institute.
